Flow chart - PPE issuing and management

When you undertake risk assessments, you’ll find some hazards for which you need to issue personal protective equipment (PPE). But how should it be issued and what happens afterwards? Our flow chart shows the steps you must take.

Why you need it

Using PPE as a risk control measure is regarded as a last resort as it: (1) isn’t always worn when it should be; (2) may not be used correctly; (3) might not be maintained; and (4) only protects the wearer. To ensure that staff receive the level of protection intended and to get the best value from your investment, PPE must be well managed. Our Flow Chart - PPE Issuing and Management summarises the actions which need to be taken when you issue it and beyond.

Note. Our flow chart is based on the Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992 so by using it you’ll stay on the right side of the law.

How’s the document organised?

We’ve recognised three different aspects of PPE management. Firstly, there’s the issuing of standard PPE personally to staff. Secondly, there will be supplies of items which are held in a central place and issued when required. This will include shared PPE as well as disposables. Lastly, there are the facilities to be provided, signage to display and visitors to manage. As a result we’ve divided our flow chart into three columns: (1) “Staff management”; (2) “Stores”; and (3) “Premises”.

Adapt the flow chart to your business and use to instruct managers and staff in your expectations.
