The aim of this Safety Briefing - Safe Working on Electrical Circuits is to ensure that all staff are fully aware of the risks of electrical contact which could lead to accidents involving injury or death.
Hazards and risks
The briefing identifies the hazards and risks including burns to the skin caused by contact with live conductors, arcing to the eyes, and ventricular fibrillation.
Management
Control measures include all work to be completed as per the 18th Edition of the IEE Regulations, using lock-off switches and systems and following the conditions set out in a permit to work.
Key points
Attendees must take note of the following key points:
- “Only competent staff should carry out electrical work.
- Ensure that a safe system of work is in place and that the work has been planned.
- Always check that circuits have been isolated prior to working on them.
- “Live working” should only be undertaken where a permit-to-work system is in place.
- Use insulated hand tools etc.
- Ensure that test instruments have been calibrated in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.”
