To save energy in your office you’ll need staff on board. Use this briefing to set out your objectives, both financial and environmental.
The aim of this briefing is to explain to staff what’s expected of them personally in contributing to your energy-saving plans. It includes generic advice on energy saving as well as sections you can tailor to your own organisation’s needs. Where available, you should include information on: (1) your carbon footprint; (2) energy usage; (3) targets for improvement; and (4) methods of monitoring.
Briefings are a useful tool if you are seeking certification to an environmental management standard. Standards such as BS EN ISO14001 require that the employer involves staff in achieving its environmental objectives.
The briefing includes a description of the negative consequences of energy wastage.
We’ve included a list of basic expectations for behaviour at work, e.g. avoiding unnecessary use of lighting, heating, water, printers and other resources. Staff are asked to report any sources of energy waste so that these can be dealt with by managers.
The key points remind attendees that they are jointly responsible for the company’s energy use, that they must use energy efficiently and report any concerns.
