Safety briefing - use of abrasive wheels

This briefing addresses the key risks and control measures for managing the use of abrasive wheels.

What’s covered?

The aim of this Safety Briefing - Use of Abrasive Wheels is to ensure all staff are fully aware of the potential risks, what can happen if abrasive wheels aren’t properly managed and what they should be doing to minimise the risks.

Reasons for concern

The briefing identifies the hazards and risks including disks exploding and physical injuries caused by contact with a moving disk.

Control measures

Control measures include mounting disks properly, using them as directed by the manufacturer and ensuring that appropriate guards are in place.

Key points

Attendees must take note of the following key points:

  • Only properly trained and nominated people may change and mount new wheels.
  • Where there is a rest for supporting the work piece it must be properly secured and adjusted as close as practicable to the wheel.
  • Every wheel will be provided with a guard that encloses the whole of the wheel except the part, which must be exposed for the grinding or cutting operation.
  • Persons operating abrasive wheels will make full and proper use of the guards and other appliances provided for their safety.
  • Do not use a grinding or cutting machine with an abrasive wheel, which is faulty. Report all defects without delay.
