Safety briefing - ISO 45001

This briefing provides a short introduction to the occupational health and safety management standard ISO 45001.

What’s covered?

The aim of this Safety Briefing - ISO 45001 is to give some background understanding on the international health and safety standard. Employee awareness is essential where a company has certification or is working towards it.

What is a health and safety management system?

The five elements of a health and safety management system are outlined: (1) policy; (2) planning; (3) implementation and operation; (4) checking; and (5) review.

A summary of benefits

Whilst there is a legal requirement for employers to have a policy and arrangements for health and safety at work, there is no law requiring certification. However, doing so helps to ensure that the system is well structured and reassures staff, customers and the public of the employer’s high standards. It may also help a company to win work.

Key points

Attendees must take note of the following key points:

  • “To keep its ISO 45001 certification a company must show that all employees understand the safety management system and that they follow it.
  • Make sure you read and understand the health and safety policy and your own responsibilities.
  • Understand any procedures including safe systems of work, emergency response and accident reporting procedures.
  • Report any problems which have caused, or could lead to, accidents or ill health.
  • If you cannot follow procedures for any reason or believe that procedures need to be amended, report it promptly to your manager or the company’s compliance manager.
  • If you are asked questions by an auditor, answer politely and be ready to tell them key points as above.”
