Introduction to this document

Risk assessment - general maintenance and gardening

If you’re looking to tidy up your premises and to keep the garden areas in check, use our risk assessment to cover these works.

Tackling the job in-house

Although many businesses use contractors to complete gardening and basic maintenance works, doing so is certainly not compulsory. In fact, having a member of staff on board who’s capable of fixing things, painting and decorating, gardening, etc. can be very useful. However, keeping it in-house means making sure that any tasks you ask your staff to complete are safe. This is where our Risk Assessment - General Maintenance and Gardening document comes in.

Starting point

The document begins by suggesting that all works must be planned so that others using the building aren’t put at risk. We’ve kept it simple by suggesting that signs and barriers are used, work is done out of hours, etc. We have also made it clear that whoever completes the work should tell their colleagues to stay away from anyone carrying out potentially hazardous tasks.

What to do with the document?

Before your staff get the lawn mower out, give them a copy of this document and run through the control measures. Make it clear that they must follow the safe systems of work and not do anything they feel may be unsafe.
