Introduction to this document

COSHH/DSEAR assessment - petrol and diesel

If your staff are involved in handling petrol and diesel, they’re potentially at risk from ill health effects and fire. Tailor our assessment to determine the precautions needed in your workplace.

Standard

The handling of fuels involves both risks to health and from fire. Therefore, the risk assessment needs to cover the requirements of the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 and the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002. Our example COSHH/DSEAR Assessment - Petrol and Diesel uses our standard record form.

Who needs it?

The types of business activities which could bring staff into contact with petrol and diesel include grounds maintenance, work with heavy plant, motor vehicle or boat repairs and fuel sales. So we’ve assumed that your staff might be involved in refuelling, draining down fuel tanks, removing fuel tanks etc. You should therefore adapt the assessment accordingly to ensure it reflects what you actually do.

Limitations

Bear in mind that the assessment only covers the risk of contact with petrol and diesel. Other hazards associated with the use of equipment, manual handling etc. aren’t included, so you’ll need to cover those in your general risk assessments.
