Introduction to this document

Pre-start workplace safety checklist

When you arrive at a client’s premises use our checklist to make sure that it’s safe to start work.

Setup

When you arrive on site the facilities you were promised often fail to materialise and unexpected rules may be imposed which make the job harder. For example, you asked for an area to store materials and park vehicles but it hasn’t been made available. To prevent problems such as this, use our Pre-Start Workplace Safety Checklist.

What to do?

By sitting down with the client for a few minutes to agree the points raised on the document should help you to identify any significant hazards, site safety rules, emergency arrangements, etc. Plus, if both parties sign the document, you’ll have a formal record of the information which has been exchanged and agreed.

What’s covered?

The first part of the document provides space to identify the job/client’s details. Following this, the “General” section covers some basic site setup issues.

Hazards

The next section covers site-specific risks which should have been dealt with by the client before you begin. These include other contractors/staff working nearby, the presence of asbestos-containing materials and slip/trip hazards. You can use the document to identify whether this has happened and, if not, the course of action you need to follow to reduce the risks to you and your staff.
