Permit to work - work at height
If your staff or contractors carry out work at height, you have a legal responsibility to ensure that the work is done safely. Our permit to work will help you to fulfil your duty.
What’s covered?
As described at the top of the form, the “Permit to work is to be applied to any work at height involving the use of a scaffold, scaffold tower, mobile elevating work platform or work on a roof (except for a flat roof with suitable edge protection to effectively eliminate the work at height risk).”
The permit should be issued by someone who has been authorised to do so on behalf of your organisation. They should have sufficient knowledge and understanding to make the checks listed on the form.
The document is divided into six parts:
- Part 1 - Job details
- Part 2 - Precautions
- Part 3 - Authorisation
- Part 4 - Receipt
- Part 5 - Hand back
- Part 6 – Cancellation.
Part 2 includes questions which should be answered before each work at height activity. It covers topics such as competency, suitability of equipment, ground conditions, emergency rescue, use of harnesses and supervision.
