LPG safety checklist
Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) such as propane and butane is a fire and explosion risk so needs to be treated with respect. Use our checklist to ensure the risks are tightly controlled.
The dangers
LPG is highly dangerous, taking only a small source of ignition for a fire to break out. As the gas is heavier than air it collects in low areas, such as drains and gullies, which may not be noticed since it’s also colourless.
The other hazards with LPG concern the fact that it is held under pressure. If the cylinder is involved in a fire, the gas may be suddenly released: cylinders involved in fires can shoot into the air and cause a danger to fire fighters and others nearby. Furthermore, an accidental impact involving the valve, e.g. if there’s a vehicle collision, can have a similar effect.
To ensure that they are being used safely conduct a review using our LPG Safety Checklist. The form also covers some security aspects of gas storage.
Our document is broken down into four main sections which cover bulk containers; storage of cylinders; transport; and using and handling LPG cylinders.
Once the checklist has been completed, it should be signed and the outstanding actions undertaken.
