Whole body vibration checklist

If you use machinery or vehicles which cause vibration throughout the body, you have duties under the Control of Vibration at Work Regulations 2005 (CVWR) to manage that risk. Our checklist will set you on the right path.

Identifying and reducing vibration

Under the CVWR you must assess the risks arising from work activities that can cause whole body vibration. The main concern is that it may cause back pain or exacerbate an existing back injury.

Our Whole Body Vibration Checklist can assist you in forming the basis of the risk assessments which are required. It prompts you to start by identifying if any staff are at risk of whole body vibration through work activities such as driving fork lift trucks or working on vibrating machinery platforms. It then moves on to ways of reducing vibration levels, e.g. via job rotation or by providing vibration dampeners.

The second half of the checklist explores other control measures that you should have in place. These include having regular maintenance programmes to ensure that the equipment is working as designed and that staff have been trained in how to use it correctly. You’re also asked whether you’ve informed staff about the warning signs to look out for with regards to ill-health symptoms.
