Pregnancy health and safety checklist

Some 97% of potential pregnancy-related tribunal claims involve failure to carry out a risk assessment. This is why we’ve included a checklist to help you identify any hazards that your assessment should cover.

Pregnancy

According to research carried out by the Equal Opportunities Commission, 97% of potential pregnancy-related tribunal claims involve a failure to carry out a risk assessment. Therefore a Pregnancy Health and Safety Checklist will be useful in helping you identify the hazards, which your assessment should cover. It may also help keep you out of tribunal.

When to use the checklist

Ideally, the checklist should be completed as soon as you’re made aware of the pregnancy. Apart from the safety aspect, this will maximise the amount of time available to you to for planning any reorganisation or transfer of tasks that may be necessary for health and safety purposes.

Completing the checklist

This checklist is divided into four sections which reflect the different types of hazard that could face pregnant workers. These are as follows: physical job demands; mental job demands, such as challenging deadlines; general working conditions and specific hazards, such as chemical use or exposure to vibration. Due to the risks of a claim, this checklist should be signed and dated and kept for at least three years.
