Flow chart - night worker health

Night shift require a health assessment. But when exactly does this apply and how should you go about organising it? Our flow chart explains all.

maintaining good health

It’s recognised that working night shifts can be bad for health because it disrupts the natural cycle of sleeping and waking. It has other related effects such as an increased accident risk from excessive fatigue.

Because of these factors the Working Time Regulations 1998 place restrictions on the working hours of night workers and insist on the provision of health assessments. The legislation works alongside the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 which give added protection to new and expectant mothers at work, including those who are night workers.

To keep on the right side of the law you can follow the process we’ve outlined in our Flow Chart - Night Worker Health.
