Introduction to this document

Permit to work - contractor management

If you have contractors on site, work must be managed so that neither your staff nor theirs are put at risk.

Keep control

If you have contractors on site, you need to have made appropriate arrangements to ensure that they can complete the work safely. For example, you don’t ask them to work in an area that has high traffic movement or where other potentially hazardous operations are being completed close by.

Tool for the job

Our Permit-to-work - Contractor Management document will help you understand what work is being completed and when, and that you’ve done everything required.

Task specific

The document should to be completed by whoever is managing the work on your behalf. We have referred to this individual as the project manager. They should assign the document a unique number, date it and identify how long it is to be in place. If it’s a small project, the permit can be live for the whole job. If it’s a longer one, then it may be best to have one per week.

Who’s on the job?

There is space for you and the contractor to identify who is completing the work, plus identify any potential hazards and the control measures that are to be in place.

The project manager and the contractors’ representative sign to authorise the work can be started. There is also space to confirm that the permit has been cancelled.
