Manual handling checklist

Assessing the risks to staff from manual handling is a legal requirement. To help you do this, we have introduced a checklist that can be used in a variety of different working environments.

Reducing handling risks

Apart from the fact that assessing manual handling operations is a legal requirement, the risk of injury is much greater in certain environments, e.g. where heavy loads and vehicles are present. For this reason and because back injuries are one of the biggest reasons for sickness absence, we have included a Manual Handling Checklist.

Completing the checklist

Completion of the first section will help you identify whether a full assessment is needed. It does this by asking a series of questions which relate to the handling task. If you run through them and find that you can answer “yes”, e.g. the task involves strenuous pushing or lots of repetitive handling, then a full assessment will be required. If so, the rest of the checklist takes you through other sections concerned with the load, the working environment, personal factors and information.
