Flow chart - product safety recall/withdrawal

Despite your best efforts, occasionally the products you supply may be unsafe. You need to be prepared to take appropriate action in such a situation. Use our flow chart to take you through the right steps.

How does it work?

By following our Flow Chart - Product Safety Recall/ Withdrawal you’ll be able to respond effectively in the event of a product defect. It’s been designed for use in any type of product supply chain whether that’s food, electrical, machinery, furniture, etc. Simply work down the page, following the steps until your response is complete.

Your first action is to suspend any further distribution to restrict the faulty goods in circulation. You then need to make contact with the enforcement agency as is legally required.

The remainder of the flow chart works through the actions of withdrawing a product from the market, issuing recall information to consumers and reviewing the incident.

Note. The enforcement agency for the majority of products is Trading Standards, however some product sectors have their own specific agency, e.g. the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency, and the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency.
