Introduction to this document

Fire precautions - means of escape

Ensuring that your premises has adequate means of escape is about the most critical part of your fire risk assessment. Use our form to record what’s in place and check that it’s suitable.

How to use the form

Means of escape in the event of fire include corridors, walkways, stairs and final exits. The adequacy of the means of escape depends on whether: (1) there are enough routes out of the building; (2) travel distances are acceptable; and (3), if required, routes are protected from fire and smoke.

Getting this right may require some research, depending on the building and the experience of the assessor. To help, we’ve provided some links to government guidance.

Once you’ve completed our Fire Precautions - Means of Escape document, it should be added to the rest of your risk assessment documentation.
